Pedagogic Possibilities for Using Photographic Images in Didactic Mathematics Books

Abstract

Humanity crosses a period of intense changes, having, with the usage of images, a way to register, express and promote facts that characterize contemporaneity. In the current article, we have, as a guiding question: what is the role of the photographic image in Mathematics didactic books? We used qualitative bibliographic approach. As a result, we have verified that the photographic image can assume illustrative, communicative and epistemic functions regarding several mathematic subjects, mainly in Geometry and, especially in symmetry. As far as the epistemic function, we have detected a percentage of about 65% of computed photos able to mediate, express and communicate elements related to the mathematic subject to be seen, bringing us to the conclusion about the importance of the insertion of photographic images in Mathematics books, in an intentional and planned manner, as a way to contribute to the subjects' teaching and learning process.
