Pluriform e Multidirectional: power relations and the composition of Mathematics textbooks

Abstract

Based on Foucauldian inspirations, we aim to analyze and describe in this article the multidirectional forms of power relations in the control of subjects’ behavior, as well as the way in which counter conductive movements impose resistance to this control, (re) configuring the network that constitutes the Mathematics textbook. Through a cartographic proposal, we conducted semi-structured interviews with different characters who work in the production network of these didactic books – authors, editors, and designers – as well as people who, for many years, were at the forefront of the National Textbook Program) and public school mathematics teachers. The results point to the existence of pluriform and multidirectional power relations, in which authors, editors, editorial groups, PNLD, and teachers are both at the same time targets and channels for power transmission. Likewise, we observe in the different sectors a counter conductive movement that stresses, imposes other paths and (re) configures the constitutive network of the Mathematics textbook.
