Constitution of Local Communities of Practice and the Learning Environment of Mathematical Modeling: some relations

Abstract

This paper presents the potentialities of the learning environment of Mathematical Modeling in the constitution of a Local Community of Practice (LCoP). The study was developed in the context of qualitative research, based on a classroom episode, raised by Mathematical Modeling, in which the actions developed by teacher and students are analyzed according to the characteristics of the formation of an LCoP. The results show some typical characteristics of the learning environment of Mathematical Modeling, such as the mathematical study of a subject with reference in the reality; the performance of the students in the process of questioning, investigation and their engagement in the learning environment; and the construction of spaces for interactions, which underlie the development of actions concerning the constitution of LCoP.
