Behavior of parent and F1 populations of soybean in relation to Colaspis sp and Diabrotica speciosa (Germar 1824)

The performance of parent and F1 populations of soybeans crosses PI 227.687 x 'Santa-Rosa' and PI 227.687 x 'Paraná', in relation to the leaf beetles Colaspis sp. (probably C. occidentalis (L.) and Diabrotica speciosa (Germar, 1824) (Coleoptera, Chrysomelidae), was observed under greenhouse conditions, at Campinas, State of São Paulo. The plants were cultivated in pots and were artificially infested with the adult insects. The PI 227.687 showed resistance to the feeding action of the two species of leaf beetles. The Fl populations had percentages of leaf area damage similar to the resistance parent, suggesting that the resistance is dominant. D. speciosa besides feeding on the leaves frequently cuts the petioles off. The number of damaged petioles by this beetle species gave results comparable to the percentage of leaf area eaten and led to the same conclusions.
