SUMMARY
The virus of vira-cabeca (tomato spotted wilt virus group) has been visualized in dipping preparations made from infected leaf tissues from various host plants. Spherical particles somewhat flattened, with an average diameter of 120 mμ, were present in all preparations from infected plants and in none from the same species infected with the Brazilian tobacco streak virus.
The vira-cabeça virus particles as seen in dipping preparations have a diameter (120 mμ) larger than that of the tomato spotted wilt virus particles from preparations in which the three-dimensional shape of this virus was preserved (85 mμ). This difference in diameter is attributed to a flattening that occurs in the process of making the dipping preparations with the vira-cabeça virus.
The fact that the vira-cabeça virus can be detected in dipping preparations permits a rapid diagnosis of the diseases induced by this virus on its various host plants. It is likely that dipping preparations might also permit the observation of other spherical viruses that have large particles, such as potato yellow dwarf, rice dwarf and clover wound tumor viruses.
The resemblance in the morphology of the vira-cabeça virus and that of the tomato spotted wilt vims adds evidence that they belong to the same virus group.
