Nitrogen concentration in sugarcane (Saccharum officinarum L., cultivar CB 41/76)

SUMMARY

Total nitrogen and nitrate nitrogen in sugarcane leaves cultivar CB 41/76, of eighteen months old plants, and total nitrogen of ratoon cane from a fertilizer nitrogen trial, installed in Latosolic B "Terra Roxa" in the Moji-Mirim county of the State of São Paulo were determined periodically. The experimental design utilized was a randomized block with fifteen treatments and four replications. Ammonium sulphate was applied at the rate of 90 and 180 kg/ha of N at planting time or rates were divided in such a manner that they were equally applied two, three, four, five and six times at intervals of 60 days. All plots including the treatment without nitrogen received uniformly 100 kg of P₂O₅ and 90 kg of K₂O per ha. The results obtained confirm the dificulties in obtaining an index of nitrogen which could reveal the nutritional status of sugarcane in unirrigated sugarcane crop.
