SUMMARY

An experiment was made to compare the effects of some new miticides with products already in regular use in the State of São Paulo for the control of the two spotted mites (Tetranychus urticae Kock) under greenhouse conditions. The products were sprayed once and residual counts of the mites were made 3, 7, 14 and 21 days later.

Diazinon and Clorobenzilate were totally inefficient in spite of good leaf coverage. Gmethoat, Chlorophenamidin, Formothion and Monocrotophos showed very good control until 7 days after spraying. The effect of Plictran and Carbophenothion also persisted until that time.

The check plants and those treated with Diazinon were dead 14 days after spraying, due to a great increase in mite population. Omethoat and Chlorophenamidin were still the best products at that time.

The mite population increased to a such high level, as revealed by the 21st day count, that the experiment was discontinued. Omethoat, Chlorophenamidin and Plictran gave the smallest mite counts. Plants treated with Formothion were dead at this time.

The short residual action observed in this experiment for some systemic miticides might be due to the rapid growth exhibited by the plants under greenhouse conditions.
