This paper describes the soil units, at series level, mapped in the Estação Experimental de Monte Alegre do Sul, State of São Paulo. The general topography is rolling to steep and the area lies between 600 and 1000 meters altitude. The rocks are from the Precambrian period and are represented by gnaisses and quartzites. In the past, the coffee plantations were dominant. Actually the economic welfare is returning though the development of temperate and subtropical fruit plantations like apple, pear, peach, fig, strawberry and so forth. Based on the criteria of humid color, thickness, depth and texture of the horizons, original material, presence of transported material and gravels, internal drainage and modification by men, the soils were classified into 13 mapping units. The paper describes not only the mapping units, but also the relief, climate, geology and regional and local vegetation. Chemical and physical analyses of the collected soils and a tentative correlation of these units with the 7th Aproximation of the American Classification are presented.
