Fertilizer experiments with corn in the paraíba valley

Three experiments were conducted at São José dos Campos, State of São Paulo, in an area of the Tumirim soil series, to study the effects of nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, and lime on the corn crop. As one of the trials showed a high variation coefficient, the conclusions are mainly based on the results of the other two. Nitrogen did not increase the yields and the effect of potash was wery small. These results are perhaps due to the location of the trials in areas fallowed for a long time, the strong acidity of the soils, the placement of the fertilizers in contact with the seed, and the use of ammonia-N. The effect of phosphorus was high, and the presence of lime enhanced that of its larger rates of application. As for lime, its effect was satisfactory in the presence of the higher quantities of phosphorus but none or negative in the presence of moderate rates of that nutrient or in its absence.
