SUMMARY

This paper presents the results of a fertilizer trial carried out with the purpose to determine the most efficient manner of nitrogen application for conditions offered in the State of São Paulo

The trial was conducted at the Usina Junqueira on a "terra-roxa" typo soil. Designed in randomized blocks with ten treatments and three replications, the trial consisted of 4 different ways of applying the nitrogen to sugar cane.

The application of nitrogen as ammonium sulphate was made at the rates of 75 and 150 kg/ha, each rate being top dressed in all of the four ways as described hereafter: a) the whole amount 2 and a half months after planting (April); b) the whole amount 9 months after planting (November); c) half the amount at the former date (April) and half at the latter (November); d) one third each in April and November and the last third 11 months after planting.

The phosphorous and potassic fertilizers were applied at the rates of 120 and 150 kg/ha respectively. Phosphorus as superphosphate in the furrow at planting time with half of potassium as potassium chloride and half with the first top dressing of nitrogen.

The statistical analysis of the results showed that the differences between the rates of 75 and 150 kg/ha of nitrogen were not significant nor were the four manners of their application.
