A possible source of resistance to Sitophilus zeamais in corn in the husk

Under laboratory conditions and artificial infestations, it was demonstrated that the open pollinated corn variety Acre collected in the Amazonas region was less infested by Sitophilus zeamais than six other corn germplasms (synthetics and hybrids) utilized as checks. The Acre has longer husks beyond the tip, more compact husks, is a flint type corn and had the lowest percentage of ears with exit holes made by the Heliothis zea caterpillar. It is probable that the favorable combination of these four characteristics in only one variety explains its lower degree of infestation by the rice weevil. The compactness of the husk was the factor that showed the highest correlation with the degree of infestation by the weevil.
