Nectarine breeding at the Instituto Agronômico of Campinas, State of São Paulo, Brazil

In 1970, a nectarine breeding program was started aimming to select new cultivars specially adapted to the local mild winter climatic conditions. Twenty seven progenies F1 were obtained from 16 local peach cultivars, crossed by 3 nectarines introduced from Florida - 'Sunred' ('Rubro-sol'), Fla 19-37S ('Colombina') and Fla 44-28. In the generation F1, six new peaches were selected which showed very promising prospects regarding local adaptation, fruit quality and earliness: IAC 170-14, IAC 270-10, IAC 370-5, IAC 370-8, IAC 1870-2 and IAC 2370-3. In the generation F2, four new nectarines were selected from 13 progenies obtained by self-pollination: IAC N 674-4, IAC N 1574-25, IAC N 1974-7 and IAC 2374-8, while two nectarines were selected from 12 progenies obtained by open-pollination: IAC N 3174-5 and IAC N 4474-5. All of them show low chilling requirement, good appearance and high fruit quality.
