Sugar cane variety trials 1957-1960

A new series of five sugar cane variety trials was carried out from 1957 to 1960, at the following localities in the State of São Paulo: 1) Usina Tamoio, Araraquara, on terra-roxa soil type; 2) Usina Santa Elisa, Sertãosinho, on terra-roxa-misturada soil; 3) Usina Ester, Cosmópolis, and 4) Usina Pôrto Feliz, both on terra-roxa-misturada Glacial soil, and 5) Usina Itaiquara, Tapiratiba, on the massapê-salmourão soil. The varieties given below were compared in balanced lattice squares, 4x4, with 5 replications: Co. 419, CB. 40/69, CB. 41/76, CB. 46/16, CB. 46/44, CB. 46/48 CB. 46/52, CB. 47/15, CB. 47/355, CB. 47/368, CB. 49/260, CB. 50/41, N:Co. 334, B. 40/105. Q. 50 and Pindar. Three harvests (plant cane and two ratoons) were made in each of the five tests. Statistical analysis was made of cane and sugar yields of the first harvest and of the sum of the three harvests. The results obtained permit the following conclusions: (a) Of the varieties compared, CB. 41/76 gave the best yields in spite of having a lower sugar content than Co. 419. CB. 40/69 gave good yields, but has a tendency to lodge and does not ratoon well when cut early. Co. 419, the variety most planted in the state of São Paulo, shows a gradual reduction in yield resulting from disease incidence. (b) The varieties CB. 47/15, CB. 49/260, and N:Co. 293 gave good results; the first, while giving lower cane tonnage than the others, had a high sugar content and was early. CB. 49/260 yielded a good cane tonnage, but its sugar content was not of the best. N:Co. 293 gave good yields at the Usinas Santa Elisa, Itaiquara, and Pôrto Feliz. It is thus recommended for these regions. (c) The varieties CB. 47/368 and CB. 47/355 gave good cane tonnage, but are not being recommended for planting because of their low sugar content. (d) The varieties Pindar, Q. 50, and CB. 46/44 showed a high sugar content, but are not recommended because of low cane yields. Q. 50 is also very susceptible to mosaic. (e) CB. 45/19 was tested only at Usina Pôrto Feliz where it gave good cane yields and had an average sugar content. (f) The other varieties tested gave small yields, except for CB. 46/16 that performed well at the Usina Itaiquara.
