Wheat breeding: IV. Evaluation of hybrid lines obtained by using cultivar IAC-5 as the recurrent paren

Wheat lines were obtained by crossing and backcrossing the recurrent cultivar IAC-5 with others showing good agronomic characteristics. They were studied in field experiments carried out at Santa Inês Farm, Maracaí, during the years of 1979 and 1980, in Fachinal Farm, Paranapanema, in 1979 and Capão Bonito Experimental Station, in 1980. Grain yield, plant height and resistance to stem rust were evaluated under field conditions, and tests of tolerance to rust and to aluminum were made in greenhouse and in laboratory, respectively. Considering the mean of all experiments in relation to grain yield the best lines were: 4-H-1695-1, S-H-1695-2, 17-H-1695-3, 7-H-1694 and 2-H-1610. The last one behaved as the most adapted to high soil fertility without Al3+ toxicity. The lines 2-H-1610 and 14-H-1699-3 showed very good resistance to the stem rust races under field and greenhouse conditions. Four lines out of the fifteen studied were shorter than the cultivar IAC-5. The lines 7-H-1694, 8-H-1695-2, 17-H-1695-3 and 11-H-1698-2 were as tolerant to 6 ppm of aluminum in the nutrient solution as the cultivar IAC-5.
