SUMMARY

Coffee seedlings raised in sheet wood containers according to common practices in the state of São Paulo were infested artificially with the root-knot nematode, Meloidogyne exigua Goeldi.

When about six months old the average height of the infested seedlings was 19.1 ± 0.4 cm, whereas that of the same number of non-infested control seedlings was 24.9 ^± 0.3 cm.

Stunting of the coffee seedlings is atributed to the primary depressive effect induced by the nematodes on the seedlings roots.
