SUMMARY
In 1963, an abnormality, characterized by leaf rolling, petiole flattening, stunting, and lack of development of the apical shoot, were observed in potato plants grown in an organic soil at Paraiba Valley, S Paulo State. Preliminar experiences indicated that application of a mixture of micronutrients to the soil, avoided these symptoms and caused a nearly three fold increase in the tuber production.
Two series of experiments were then carried out in 1965, in which different micronutrients, individually or all together, were added to the standard NPK fertilizer, to be used in a potato culture grown in the same site where the abnormalities were observed.
Among the several treatments, only those containing boron induced an increase in tuber production and kept plants free from the symptoms. In these experiments a significant correlation was noted between the boron content of the leaves and the tuber production (r1 = 0.53; r2 = 0.39).
These data strongly suggest that the observed abnormality in potato plants are due to boron defficiency.
