The influence of humidity and temperature on viability of onion seed in storage

Oswaldo Bacchi

SUMMARY

The influence of relative humidity and temperature on the viability of onion seed was determined by storing different lots of seeds at seven levels of relative humidity and four temperatures.

From the experimental results presented in this note, it is readily seen that both the relative humidity and the temperature of the storage medium play important roles in preserving the viability of seeds.

After four years of storage, it was found that there was no loss of viability in seeds kept at the following humidity-temperature combinations:

1) room temperature or 30° C and relative humidity of 10% or less;

2) temperature of 10° C and relative humbidities below 20%, and

3) temperature of 5° C and relative humidities up to 70%.
