The influence of humidity and temperature on viability of lettuce seed in storage

SUMMARY

The effects of relative humidity and temperature on longevity of stored seeds of lettuce (Lactuca sativa L.) were studied during a period of four years.

The results obtained showed clearly that the longevity of the seeds decreased with increasing relative humidity and temperature and further, that high humidities and high temperatures were very detrimental.

At the end of lhe experiments there wqs no loss of viability in seeds stored at room temperature and at a relative humidity of 0%.

At 10°C, the longevity was maintained equally well at relative humidities of 0% and 10%.

Seeds stored ot 5°C showed no loss of viability even in atmosphere of 70% relative humidity.
