Yielding variability of dry bean cultivars at campinas

During the last 30 years hundreds of dry bean introduction from all over the world and from several regions in Brazil have been studied in several experiment stations of the Instituto Agronômico. After one or two years of observation the most promising ones with good agronomic characteristics are. tested in comparative trials with the best selections which are grown at present, in the dry and the rainy season. From 1958 to 1961, 15 such trials were established in the dry period and 13 were planted in the rainy season. A total of 160 lines were tested to observe the yielding variability among the introductions, all of them compared with the standard 'Mulatinho 1-208'. In the dry period 68 selections gave 25% more than the tester at least in one year. Considering only the lines which were grown for three consecutive years it was noticed that Rosinha 1454-9 and Preto 147 produced, in average, 36 and 32% more than 'Mulatinho 1-208'. The results obtained in trials planted during the rainy season were more promising than those recorded for the dry season, since four new selections gave at least 25% more than the standard Mulatinho 1-208, in a theree year period. Three of the selections belong to the Rosinha (pink-seeded), and one to the Black group. Comparisons made between the yielding capacity of the different groups without taking in to account individual progenies, confirmed previous findings that Rosinha is one of the best yielder group and Roxinho has the lowest yielding capacity. The following selections within the Rosinha group are recomended for planting in any of the two bean growing seasons: 1454-1, 1454-4, 1454-10, I-43-C-7, 52, 1459. The strain Preto 147 could be used in regions where black seeded beans are accepted.
