The use of weed killers in sugar-cane cultures in two soil types of the State of São Paulo, and their effect on the cane and sugar yield

Seven different herbicides (Difenox A, Weedone LV-4, Bi-Hedonal, Karmex DW, Simazin M-50 6 and 3, Gesaprin M-50 and Kuron) were tested for weed control in sugar-cane cultures in two different soils (red mixed clay and sandy) at the Cosmopolis county, State São Paulo. Control plots were weeded manually. The herbicides were used at two different levels: one as recommended by the maker, and the other at half of this dosage, except Kuron which was used at 7 and 5 1/ha. The results showed that: a) All herbicides used at the trade recommended rates have satisfactorily controlled weeds, in both types of soil, with the exception of Gasaprin M-50 which in the sandy soil gave poor weed control. Kuron, Karmex DW and Simazin M-50 showed to be good controllers even at the lower rates, in the red soil. In the sandy soil, Kuron, Karmex DW, Simazin M-50, Difenox A and Weedone LV-4 were also successfully used at the same lower rates; b) in the red soil no influence of the weed killers was noted on the number of plants and productivity of cane, as compared with the plots weeded manually, nor was there any difference in sugar cane per metric ton of harvested canes; c) on the other hand, in the sandy soil, Difenox A, Bi-Hedonal, Weedone LV-4, Simazin M-50 and Kuron had as a result higher yield in number, sugar and also in weight of cane, as compared with the tester plots.
