Factors that imply the process of early contact and breastfeeding in the birth room

Abstract

Background

in order to get breastfeeding promotion, protection and support, institutions which adhere to the Baby Friendly Hospital Initiative (BFHI) adopt the so-called “Ten steps for the breastfeeding success”. The fourth step of the BFHI consists in helping the mothers to begin the breastfeeding half an hour after the delivery, still in the delivery room.

Objective

to identify the facilitating and hindering factors for make early contact and breastfeeding in the first half hour after delivery, for health professionals, considering the institutional context.

Methods

A qualitative study involving 21 health professionals from a public maternity hospital, analyzed through the sense interpretation method.

Results

the Contributions of women in early contact and breastfeeding in the view of health professionals is linked to desire and acceptance, but on the other hand, their passivity, family living environment, myths, taboos, socioeconomic and cultural factors was used as hindering. Among the strategies to improve early contact and breastfeeding in the delivery room, the participants identified facilitating factors such as humanized care, prenatal counseling and uncomplicated childbirth; and the hindering factors such as complications in childbirth, absence of caregivers and cesarean section.

Conclusion

the questions presented above are directly related to the care model followed by the participants who expressed themselves clearly during the observations and interviews.
