ACCESSIBILITY SERVICES FOR PERSONS WITH INTELLECTUAL DISABILITIES: THE EXPERIENCE OF MUSEUM EDUCATORS

ABSTRACT

This article presents a study on accessibility services for adults with intellectual disabilities in two art museums—the Pinacoteca do Estado and the Museu de Arte Moderna de São Paulo (MAM–SP). We researched the various services that are designed with this audience in mind. By looking at what these visitors take from the museum and leave there, we also analyzed, from the educators’ point of view, how the presence of this group impacts on the museum discourse in favor of diversity, helping to deconstruct social stigmas associated with people with intellectual disabilities.
