The use of municipal school atlases and the forms of knowledge building in the classroom: an analysis of teaching situations

This text is an adaptation of part of the discussion of a master's degree thesis developed in the area of teaching methodology for the Post-graduation Program in Education of the Federal University in São Carlos. The work sought to identify the practices that two 4th grade female teachers built to promote the teaching of geographical, historical and environmental contents using municipal maps from the Atlas of Limeira. The results point out that the didactic conceptions and models constructed by these teachers generated the forms of knowledge built in the classroom. The use of maps in teaching allows two forms of knowledge building: one considers teaching as a knowledge transmission, whereas the other sees teaching as a collective construction. The subjects of this investigation helped us verify that, in a schooling context, the atlas generated motivating teaching and learning processes because they deal with local problems experienced by both the teachers and their students.
