The teaching of statistics and probability at elementary schools and teacher education

This paper is about the relevance and goals of teaching and learning about statistics and probability in basic education. From results of researches carried out in statistics education in mathematics education, in the last few decades, it brings up considerations about the stochastic teaching and learning process during childhood and adolescence. The text also presents recommendations related to the mathematics curriculum referring to the study of probability and statistics. It highlights issues related to teacher education both in the beginning of their careers and along their professional lives, professional development and professional knowledge of professionals who teach mathematics at kindergarten, elementary, middle school and secondary school levels.
