This paper presents the results of investigations that have examined the social and educational actions taken by the Landless Worker’s Movement (MST), in particular those regarding work, cooperation and education. Such relationships are basic to assess the current sense and the possibilities of an education aimed at rural populations. The text brings forth some analyses on the current rural work as the expression of social inequalities and class distinction that are manifest in the various kinds of productions, activities, and individuals who live, work or invest in rural areas. It also explores the current rural education, its advantages compared with the previous model, its presence in educational policies and its extension beyond school itself. Finally it examines the importance education acquires due to rural social movements that begin to support education associated with the development of material conditions for rural life. It particularly focuses on the education that is being promoted within the Landless Worker’s Movement.
