Characterization of blended cements with red clay industry waste

Abstract

Nowadays, with the incorporation of mineral additions, it is possible to produce blended cements with specific properties for a given use. Besides cost savings associated with reduced energy and clinker, the increasing use of these cements is due to their better mechanical performance and durability compared to ordinary cement. In this context, in the present work, the red clay industry waste was ground to produce a mineral addition. Later it was combined with a high early strength Portland cement for the production of blended cements. Considering the content of clinker and pozzolanic material set in standards, a pozzolan-modified cement and a pozzolan cement were produced in the laboratory. The chemical composition, physical characteristics (density, specific surface area, normal consistency paste, setting time and soundness) and mechanical properties (compressive strength) of these cements were determined and compared with the properties of commercial cements. From the results, it was verified that the blended cements produced in the laboratory met the chemical and physical requirements of the corresponding standards. Regarding the mechanical properties, these cements showed superior mechanical performance compared to the commercial cements, with strength values up to 50% higher than the respective commercial blended cements. Thus, the pozzolan obtained from red clay industry waste is a potential alternative of mineral addition to the production of Portland cement.
