(Hydroxyapatite: support for drug release and antimicrobial properties)

Abstract

Calcium phosphates are ceramic materials that have special properties such as biocompatibility and chemical similarity to bone and dental tissues of organisms. Its porous morphology allows them as suitable material for use in small pieces of bone replacement because it provides channels growth of nervous systems, support for blood vessels as well as support for deposition of drugs. Among the calcium phosphates, hydroxyapatite is the more stable phosphate and is found in greater proportion in bone and dental tissues in the body. This study aimed to search in articles and patents databases works related to antimicrobial activity of hydroxyapatite, supporting the researchers working on these ceramics for applications in dental tissue, as well as the use of hydroxyapatite as support for drug incorporation. The databases studied were the Scopus, Scielo and Web of Science for articles and USPTO, EPO and INPI for patents. Exclusion criteria led to 19 articles and zero patent. Among the articles found, chlorhexidine is the most commonly used drug as an antimicrobial agent, and the most used bacteria in the tests is the gram-positive Streptococcus mutans.
