Refractories for molten aluminum transportation: fundaments, simulation and industrial results

Among the technologies developed for aluminum industries, the long distance (over 100 to 200 km) transportation of molten aluminum (over 8 to 10 t) in crucibles has become into an advantageous process for suppliers and customers. However, choosing crucible's lining is not an obvious task, because the materials properties must be considered to maximize performance. Thus, a systemic analysis involving design, thermodynamic, microstructure, thermal conduction and thermo-mechanical factors is required. This work aims to match these theoretical aspects, the industrial results, the laboratory characterization of materials and the computing simulations using a developed software. This software is able to predict the thermal behavior of the heated containers even under operation. Therefore, the three pillars named "theory", "simulation" and "industrial results" used in the present work were applied in the selection of the refractory lining for the molten aluminum transportation crucible.
