A review on whitewares terminology and classification

Abstract

The terminology of ceramic products on the market and even in various papers and books lacks a uniform language regarding the various types of products of whitewares. This nomenclature should be guided by technical parameters, but must also respect the tradition and history of use and development of these articles. The different designations were related to aesthetic aspects, technical properties of the body and glaze, characteristics of the raw materials and the production process. We attempted to make a brief review of the history, classification in the literature and commercial use, including the investigation of the terminology used in different geographic regions, and in the American and European standards. Based on data in the bibliography researched, a proposal was made for a nomenclature and classification of whitewares products. We tried to enrich the description of the various products, besides the simple division by the index of water absorption currently used.
