Evaluation of gems sludge incorporation in red ceramic: a case study

Over the last few years there is a growing concern about the use of nonrenewable natural resources as well as with the generation of wastes from different sectors. Fortunately, it's possible to reuse wastes, for instance, as additives in ceramic industry. The objective of this study is to evaluate the technical feasibility of incorporating the cutting gems waste in the manufacture of bricks, comparing to other work in the same county. One hundred fifty specimens were produced with 0%, 2%, 6%, 10% and 14% waste added to the ceramic mass. The results obtained after testing water absorption, homogeneity, density and compression strength revealed that it is possible to incorporate up to 2% of the residue of such waste in bulk ceramics.
