Brazilian periodicals in Institute for Scientific Information (ISI)

Considering the importance of indexation for the process of dissemination of information in contemporary society, data bases represent essential tools in this process. Amongst them, that of the Institute for Scientific Information (Philadelphia, USA), is the most complete database of scientific information in the world. Our intention is, then, to situate Brazilian science in this data base, by means of a profile of those periodicals which are at present indexed, based on parameters, such as region, state and municipality; area of knowledge; nature of the periodical; system of evaluation and many others. The universe covers the 17 titles of indexed periodicals. For the data collection, the last two volumes produced in 1999 were analyzed. The results obtained indicate the supremacy of the southeast region.
