Action research in professional Master's: research analysis of a graduate degree program in Science and Mathematics teaching

Abstract

Few investigations seek to understand how action research methodologies are used in professional Master's degrees programs. In an attempt to contribute to this debate, the article presents reflections on the importance of action research in the context of professional Master's degrees programs in Science and Mathematics Education. It starts looking at the history and challenges of Master's professional programs and goes on to the address action research as a possible investigative approach in this area of education. It aims to challenge the need to put in evidence, both, in the professional master's degrees as well as in the action research, the relations between theory and practice. On these assumptions, it tries to understand how research using the theoretical frames of this investigation method can be used to analyze dissertations produced in a post-graduation program.
