Survey of drugs use by High School students in two schools in Porto Alegre, RS, Brazil

An observational study was carried out with students from two high schools in the city of Porto Alegre (RS), Brazil. Data were obtained through objective questionnaires in the classroom, after authorization by the institution and teachers, and after the signing of an informed consent forms by students´ parents. Most students participating in this study reported the use of drugs, mainly prescribed by health professionals and with knowledge of the family. In general, they did not know if these drugs could cause some trouble. Drug advertisements on television were seen by almost all the students, who reported little or no trust in the scientific aspects described in these ads. However, 30% reported that advertising influenced the use of medications. This study indicates the need for programs aimed at raising awareness about the negative aspects of drug use. These programs could address young people, schools, families, the health teams and the media (especially television).
