History of Science in teaching from a cultural perspective: revisiting some principles from the global South views

Abstract

The potential of History of Science for science education has been discussed since the middle of the 20th century, and historical approaches are advocated for as possibilities to humanize and contextualize science teaching. However, some recent studies bring new discussions about these possibilities that have led us to discuss this issue. To contribute to the debate, we present a theoretical study on science education and its relationship with the History of Science. The discussions about the Cultural History of Science approach and Boaventura de Souza Santos' studies guided the discussion about other possibilities for humanizing and contextualizing teaching about sciences in schools in the Global South, arguing in favor of Cultural History of Science as an alternative in historiography to mark that path.
