The history of science in portuguese teachers' practice: implications for science teachers education

There are limitations of traditional Science Education in a society that more and more claims to be a "society of information and knowledge". It brings back the discussion about the need to innovate and produce new curricula and new approaches for science teaching. This idea will cross different cultures and countries, namely Portugal, leading to important curricular reforms or reorganizations, where the History of Science appears as an important dimension of the promotion of citizenship and of scientific knowledge as culture. But the following question arises: Are teachers prepared to face the new challenge? In this article we will try to give an answer to this question, building on results of research studies focused on Portuguese teachers' practices, their perceptions about their education and the importance they attach to the History of Science, as well as on the analysis of science teacher education curricula. Some implications regarding teacher education will be made according to these results.
