Feminism in Journalism

Abstract

This paper investigates how the subject of feminism was constructed in Brazilian journalism. Debates about the subject are now one of the fundamental dimensions of feminist political theory. The empirical analysis of this paper focuses on 579 texts published in the Folha de São Paulo newspaper between 1921 and 2016. In the first period (from 1921 to 1959), we observed that the framings of the subject alternated between the construction of deviant feminists and acceptable feminists. In a second moment (from 1960 to 1989), the deviant feminist framework remains together with a stronger idea of organized feminist politics. In a third moment (from 1990 to 2016), the subject of feminism is presented as deviant and a new emphasis is seen on the individual dimension of activism.
