Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) for the detection of antibodies against Rhodococcus equi in foals

The infection caused by Rhodococcus equi (R.equi) is responsible for large economic damage, losses and high mortality rates. Due to the importance of this disease, the aim of this study was to the standarize the enzyme linked immunosorbent essay (ELISA test) for Rhodococcus equi antibodies detection in foals (n=16) before and after colostrum ingestion in vaccinated mares. Two antigens of Rhodococcus equi, APTX and a commercial one were used. The results of block titulation determinated optimal concentration of antigens on 2.0µg/ml and the diluition of serum 1:200 to serum of negative and positive reference and serum tests. IgG antibodies anti-R.equi were detected in foals 150 days after colostrum ingestion. The comercial antigen detected higher and more persistent antibodies title when compared to APTX antigen. Both antigens that had used the ELISA-test, demonstrated high sensitivity.
