In order to evaluate the sunflower grain yield and yield components this experiment was carried out in Lages, SC during 1991/92 and 1992/93 growing seasons. The treatments were composed of four sunflower cultivars (Dekalb 180, GR 10, GR 16 and GR 18) sown in two planting dates (end of August and end of September). In the first year (1991/92), the sunflower yields were not affected by planting dates however in the second year (1992/93), sunflower yields were 35.1% higher when planted earlier (August). On the other hand, the grain oil contents were increased by delaying the planting date only in the second year.
