Thirty male Wistar rats were implanted under the skin with surgical nylon or fishing line maintained in formalin or fishing line autoclaved once or twice. Two different types of 3cm length suture material were implanted in each animal parallel and equidistant sites from the vertebral column. The animals were sacrificed at five, 15 and 90 days postoperative for histopathological examination. The greatest tissue reaction was observed in those animals implanted with fishing line maintained in formalin and the smallest reaction in those implanted with surgical nylon. Animals implanted with once and twice autoclaved fishing line showed similar and intermediary reaction.
