Four african and two brazilian genotypes of forage grass Hemarthria altissima were studied regarding to the number of chromosomes and meiotic behaviour. The basic number of chromosomes in the genotypes was x=9. Two african genotypes: PI 364878 and UF 553 are diploids with 2n=2x=l8; two african genotypes: PI 347238, GL 460-76 and two brasilian genotypes are tetraploids with 2n=4x=36 chromosomes. The distribution of chromosomes in the meiosis were normal in all studied genotypes.
