Acute abdomen is the major cause of mortality in horses and is frequently associated with intestinal ischemia and reperfusion (IR). In the last decades, the effects of IR in the gastrointestinal tract were extensively studied and this paper reviews the main aspects related to the pathophysiology and therapeutics of IR injury in the intestine, with special concern to the equine gastroenterology.
