THE USE OF STERNOMASTOID MUSCLE FLAP IN THE PARTIAL RECONSTRUCTION OF BOVINE CERVICAL ESOPHAGEAL WALL

The efficiency of sternomastoid muscular flap as alternative to lesion correction in esophageal wall was tested. Twenty bovines divided in two groups (A and B) and four subgroups (A1, A2, B1, B2) were utilized. These animals were submitted at esophageal segment excision. In the bovines of the group A, were removed a 3 x 6cm esophageal segment and in the group B, 3 x 3cm esophageal segment, that was corrected with sternomastoid muscle fixation. The pos-operative clinical attendance was done with laboratorial tests (leukogram, fibrinogen and plasma protein) and contrasted esophagram during a period of thirty days (subgroup A1 and B1) and forty five days (subgroup A2 and B2). At the end of these periods, the animals were sacrificed, necropsed and the esophagus were evaluated by gross and microscopic examination. It was observed that muscular flap is efficient in the enclosure of esophageal wound, offering adequate surface to epitelial regeneration.
