EFFECTS OF CLORAMPHENICOL ON INTESTINAL HEALING IN HORSES

Twelve equines, of both sexes and undefined races, aged between 24 and 60 months were divided in two experimental groups (GI and GII) which were submitted to a laparotomy at the left para-lumbar fossa and enterotomy of the small colon respectively. The GI group received chloramphenicol (50mg/kg, IV), one hour before surgery and every six hours for seven days, with intention to evaluate drug effects over intestinal healing. GII group was taken as control. Biopsies were made from the intestinal wounds at 24, 48 and 168 hours after surgery. Histopathological findings in the GI group revealed an exacerbation in the inflammatory process on both acute and chronic phases, driving to a delayed arise of the granulation tissue. The GII showed normal healing process.
