KOLLER’S CONCEPT OF EQUIVALENCE: RELATIVISED UNIVERSALISM?

Abstract

This article discusses the concept of translation equivalence as suggested by Werner Koller in the 7th edition of his book, Einführung in die Übersetzungswissenschaft (2004). The analysis is based on a comparison of the author’s views on language and translation. Assuming, as proposed by Kopetzki (1996), that a translation scholar’s perspective on language has a decisive influence on his or her view about translation, the main objective of this paper is to demonstrate that Koller favours a relativistic understanding of language and that, in some respects, his take on translation and translation equivalence challenge the universalistic character that is usually attributed to this concept in Translation Studies.
