ABOUT THE TRANSLATION OF “THE MEEK ONE” BY DOSTOEVSKY

Abstract

Starting with a brief contextualization of the reception of Dostoevsky’s work in Brazil, this article analyzes some traits of the language and style employed by the author in the story “The Meek One”. To impart spontaneity to the narrator’s speech and to convey his unease, confusion, and amazement at an unexpected event in the narrator’s life, Dostoevsky makes broad use of certain syntactic resources, such as expletive particles, repetitions, dashes, ellipses, italics, colons, and diminutives. These have the effect of transmitting the process, or the rhythm, of the composition itself, and they present genuine challenges for the translator in recreating Dostoevsky’s style in Portuguese.
