Abstract
Adopting the Other’s Point of View: George Herbert Mead, Robbery and Tactical Empathy explicits, in light of the notions of “adoption of the role or attitude of the other” by Mead and “tactical empathy” by Bundbant and Willerslev, elements that influence a situation of a robbery. To this end, it discusses how this ability to assume or adopt the role of the other or to exercise “tactical empathy” is presented, in a distinct way, in five stages. Based on interviews with people who carried out robberies in the city of Rio de Janeiro, the paper presents a study, from the point of view of the robbers, on techniques of (1) adoption or assumption of the role of the other (Mead), (2) detection of their vulnerabilities (Bubandt and Willerslev) and (3) production of “forced consent”.
