This essay discusses the evolution of the Cuban economy over the past 20 years, called "special period" by the Cuban government. The analysis details the measures taken to address the crisis and the measures taken to overcome the crisis without compromising principles and without endangering the very existence of the revolution. To support this analysis, abundant figures and bibliography are set forth, allowing us to grasp both the impact of the crisis and the results achieved during the economic recovery still underway. Finally, we offer a macroeconomic summary of the main achievements of the Cuban economy over 50 years.
