Premature’s breastfeed in a beonatal unit: the maternal experience

It is a qualitative study, which objectives were: identify the maternal difficulties in breastfeed hers premature child in a Neonatal Unit (NU), get knowledge if this mother feels stimulated to breastfeed hers premature child in that adapts and describe how is this mother living the breastfeed of hers premature child in a NU. The place was a Neonatal Unit in Rio de Janeiro. The subjects were 8 mothers of premature. The semi-structured interview had been the data collection instrument. The data was collected in the months of February and March of 2006. The Bardin’s (1977) the contents of technique based the analysis. Five categories were pointed: living a new and difficult experience in breastfeed; having difficulties on milking, hardness in fulfill the breastfeed schedule; feeling supported by health professionals and feeling excessively guided by health professional people. The study shows the need to turn our eyes to the mother’s difficulties in agreement to her want, interfering less as possible into the relationship between mother and son.
