Historical and social circumstances of the creation of the first nursing school in the Vale do Paraíba - "Dom Epaminondas"

Study that proposes to describe the historical and social circumstances of the creation of the Dom Epaminondas Nursing School in the Vale do Paraíba (São Paulo Brazil), and to analyze the strategies used for its implantation. The primary sources, found in the heritage of the school's support institution and in the city archive, and the secondary sources, from the library of the city and of the Espaço Cultural Mario Covas, treated by individual recorded and grouping for similarity and relevancy, had resulted in four thematic groupings: the Role of the City in the Treatment of the Tuberculosis; the Influence of the Catholic Church in the Health, Economy and Education; The Role of the Nursing in the Combat to the tuberculosis; and the Creation of the School. It was concluded that the school was created to take care of to the necessities of nursing staff qualification to face the changes in the therapeutical treatment of the Tuberculosis and, following the Anglo-American model of formation, to enlist and to keep man power of the pupils in the sanatoriums of the support entity of the school.
