Acupunture in childbirth analgesia: perceptions of the parturients

The study objectified to know the perceptions of the parturients attended in the maternity of the Universitary Hospital of Florianópolis about the use of acupuncture in analgesia of obstetric pains. By interviewing 31 parturients, attended in normal childbirth procedure, in April 2005, the result obtained was: 60% of the protagonists from this study are from twenty to thirty years old, from Florianópolis, in 90 % of the cases. A big parcel of women attended in maternity does not have information about acupuncture use in control of obstetric pains, reaching 95 % of the answers. However, 70% of the interviewed believe in the possibility of analgesia by acupuncture and would be disposed to experiment it, in case it would be available at the institution. Such results indicate the need of amplifying the knowledge in this area, such as qualifying the childbirth attention staff in the use of other ways of controlling obstetric pains.
